Reiki is a hands-on system of natural healing that draws on the energies of the Universe to help the body heal itself. It is “intelligent energy” in that it goes where it is needed and works on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that there are different beliefs about the origin of Reiki—one is that it is based on Tibetan sutras (texts of Buddhism) written by monks. Sources agree that in the mid-19th century, Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese physician and monk, developed this healing approach and spiritual path, named it Reiki, trained others in it, and developed an organization. One of Dr. Usui’s students further developed these teachings and opened his own clinic in Tokyo, where, in 1936, an American named Hawayo Takata went for treatment. Later, she trained in Reiki, became a Master, and is credited with introducing Reiki to the West in the late 1930s In order to become a Reiki Practitioner, one receives a series of initiations or attunements, which help to align the practitioner with these Universal healing energies. A Reiki Master is qualified to give these attunements to others and to teach this system of natural healing. I received my Reiki Master initiations in 1997 and have been teaching and practicing ever since. There are three levels of Reiki: Reiki I, Reiki II and the Master Level. In Reiki I a person receives four attunements and the background information about how Reiki came to be discovered and used for natural healing. This allows the person to practice hands-on healing for oneself and others. A full-body Reiki treatment involves light hands-on touch, is done on a massage table with the client fully clothed and takes about an hour. Most people experience a Reiki treatment as deeply relaxing or even as a deep spiritual meditation. It often stimulates healing on various levels. In Reiki II, the second level of Reiki practice, a person receives another initiation and three Reiki symbols that can then be used to send Reiki to others in the present or to oneself or events in the past or future. Reiki II can be used to support healing for any person, place or thing, in the past, present or future. “Reiki II sending” is done as a light meditation, forming the symbols in one’s mind or drawing them, opening the distant healing channels and focusing one’s intention for the highest and best healing for that person. To become a Reiki Master, the third and final level of Reiki, one receives a final attunement and two additional symbols to use in sharing the initiations with others. One also needs to demonstrate an interest in and an ability to teach Reiki to others. The new Reiki Master also receives the initiation process by which to initiate other Reiki practitioners. I teach Reiki I and II regularly and have initiated four Reiki Masters. I also provide hands-on Reiki healing sessions for a cost of $60 per session. There may be a travel fee involved if I provide this service in a private home. You may contact me directly through me e-mail address if you’d like to schedule a Reiki session for yourself or a friend or family member or if you’re interested in becoming a Reiki practitioner yourself. |
