An Artist’s Statement

By Ann Marie Waterhouse

When I begin to work in a location, is important to take the time to center and become fully present. Centering may include yoga, meditation and breathing, working with the Tarot and understanding more about who I am in this moment of time, working to build community with the people I am surrounded by, using mind-mapping to understand how things feel for me when they are working, sitting in nature, journaling, coloring, reading about the area and learning more about its history and wildlife.

My goal in making a photograph is to connect with the images that draw my attention. In order to work with the essence of a place I have learned to follow the images that draw my attention, and I practice staying with my creative potential for as long as possible. I avoid editing in the field or even driving long distances if I can avoid it. I move slowly and carefully, especially when getting into difficult terrain so as to avoid injury. Photography is a practice I do to become part of the Whole, the Universe, Great Mystery and Spirit.

I understand that my photographs serve a purpose beyond fulfilling my personal needs for creative expression. They may reflect another’s healing path or a moment of “Aha!” They may tell a story about a certain location. These outcomes, then, become the true gifts of the photograph.

Here is an excerpt from my journal on Mallard Island (Independent Artist’s Week, July 12-18, 2009) about how photography is part of my healing path:

...How is a photograph healing? When it speaks to a deep part of a person’s spiritual life or journey and reflects that part of their journey back to them as a reminder, letting the person know he/she is not alone, not struggling for nothing. A photograph gives meaning to a person’s inner work.

And how is my healing work art? When it becomes intuitive prophecy, when it speaks from another realm about and to the issues a person is working on. When it supports their path and who they are becoming with a sense of Grace and Spirit without dominating or dictating.

NOTE: The photos used in constructing this website were made by me during a trip to Ireland in the summer of 2006.
